Living with Sjögren’s means navigating chronic dryness. Since my diagnosis, I’ve found a few essentials that make daily life more manageable and comfortable. These aren’t just conveniences; they’re critical for handling a condition that impacts everyday functions like eating, speaking, and sleeping.
Here are five things I can’t live without as a patient with Sjögren’s:
1. Waterpik
Dry mouth and dental health are constant concerns with Sjögren’s. For years, I battled recurring cavities and couldn’t figure out why. No matter how diligently I brushed or flossed, the dentist always found more.
After my diagnosis, it clicked: I had to rethink my dental routine entirely.
I invested in a Waterpik, and it’s been a life-changer. Traditional flossing was uncomfortable due to the dryness, but the Waterpik uses a gentle stream of water to flush out food particles and bacteria. While there’s an upfront cost and a bit of a learning curve, it pays off in the long run for my dental health.
I use mine at least twice a day to keep my gums healthy and reduce the risk of cavities.
My dental hygienist approves. Yay!
2. Spry Gum (with Xylitol)
With Sjögren’s, it’s best to avoid sugary gum due to the increased risk of cavities.
I chew Spry gum every day to keep my mouth moist and comfortable. This isn’t just any gum. Xylitol has been shown to support oral health and stimulates saliva production, crucial when my mouth feels like sandpaper.
I keep a pack in every bag, car console, and desk drawer.
3. XyliMelts
These small, dissolvable discs are game-changers for nighttime dryness. You can easily find them at the drugstore or online (Amazon has them, too).
I place one between my upper gum and lip before bed. Throughout the night, it slowly releases xylitol and helps keep my mouth from becoming painfully dry, which is often worst while sleeping.
Without them, I’d wake up with a sore tongue and cheeks. With them, I sleep more comfortably and wake up with less irritation.
4. Prevident Toothpaste
Because people with Sjögren’s have less protective saliva, we’re at higher risk for dental decay. Prevident 5000 is a high-fluoride toothpaste that gives my teeth a fighting chance. I use it twice daily, every day.
It’s prescription-only, but your dentist or rheumatologist can prescribe it. It’s been absolutely worth it for long-term protection. They also come in different flavors. Ask your dentist!
5. Biotène Mouthwash
Here’s a key tip for Sjögren’s: avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes, which can worsen dryness. Biotène is alcohol-free, gentle, and soothing... and also fairly affordable.
I use it throughout the day, especially after meals or long conversations. It provides a quick moisture boost and keeps me feeling fresher without irritation.
Final Thoughts
These simple tools make a big difference in my daily life, not just by improving comfort but by protecting my long-term oral health. If you live with Sjögren’s or struggle with dry mouth for any reason, I hope you find something here that helps.
Everyone’s journey is different, but sometimes it’s the little things that help us not just survive but thrive.
Have tips or must-haves of your own? I’d love to hear them!
